The Eurobarometro survey, announced today in Brussels, found that "the difference between the supporters and the detractors of a new extension of the EU in the years to come is tiny": actually 46% of the interviewees state they are in favour, while 42% are against. According to the EU’s opinion poll agency, "a large majority of the citizens are in favour of a common foreign policy" among the member states (68%); the number of those who would like to have a common security and defence policy (75%) is even higher. Interesting are the comments made about the "three priority values that best embody the EU in the eyes of the citizens": top of the list is man’s rights, followed by democracy and then peace. But the values they "personally attach most importance to are peace (52%), the respect of human life (43%) and man’s rights (41%)". Among other surveyed topics, "most EU citizens disapprove of gay marriages" and "the adoption of children by gay couples".
