” “Mgr. Stanis³aw Wojciech Wielgus, until now the bishop of P³ock, is the new metropolitan archbishop of Warsaw, Poland. After accepting the resignation from the pastoral governance of the archdiocese, submitted by card. Józef Glemp, Benedict XVI appointed mgr. Wielgus successor of the cardinal. The new archbishop was born in 1939 at Wierzchowiska, in the diocese of Sandomierz, and was ordained priest in 1962 in Lublin. Since 1989 he had been for three terms rector of the Catholic University of Lublin and in 1999 he was appointed Bishop of P³ock. Within the Bishops Conference he is a member of the Permanent Council; president, for the ecclesiastical side, of the "Joint Commission of representatives of the Government and the Polish Bishops Conference" and president of the "Scientific Council" in charge of the ecclesiastical academic institutions.
