BIOETHICS: MGR. SGRECCIA, THE EMBRO IS THE "CRUCIAL NODE", "IT’S STILL A CHILD"

” “"The embryo is the crucial node of the anthropology, ethics and epistemology of all of bioethics", said mgr. Elio Sgreccia, president of the Papal Academy for Life, as he opened today, at the Vatican press room, the press conference for the presentation of the International Conference, "Human embryo at re-implantation. Scientific aspects and bioethical considerations", which will take place on February 27th and 28th in the Vatican (Aula nuova del Sinodo), on the occasion of the XII General Assembly of the Papal Academy for Life. "The pre-implantation embryo – recalled Sgreccia – is the embryo that waits in the laboratory before being implanted for in vitro fertilisation; it is the embryo that is selected and then frozen; it is the embryo that just after fertilisation and before reaching the uterus can be intercepted by the abortion pill, i.e. emergency contraception; it is the fruit of cloning, from which the embryonic stem cells are taken first". In all these circumstances, concluded Sgreccia, "the embryo, no matter what, is still a child: a boy or a girl, that has a special relationship with its parents and, for those who believe, a special relationship with God". ” “
