"These are attacks against God, civilisation and man and against all of Iraq. These are really dramatic events". These are the harsh words with which mgr. Shlemon Warduni, auxiliary Chaldean bishop of Baghdad, condemns the destruction of the ancient Shiite mosque of Ali al-Hadi, in Samara, and the retaliations that burst out in response to that, and that are opposing Shiites to Sunnis, with hundreds of victims. "The mosque he said to SIR as well as others, are precious monuments, they are a treasure for Iraq. Just think that, with its historical and cultural heritage, Iraq could live on tourism alone. Those who committed such atrocity despise Iraq and its people. They have been disrespectful to God, man and civilisation". According to mgr. Warduni, "the purpose is clear: to sow division and hatred and hinder the country’s development. This is not a civil war yet, but, when we see such slaughters, the risk must not be underestimated. The religious leaders, both Christian and Muslim, made an appeal to make reason and peace triumph. Today I say, blessed are the meek because they will inherit the earth. We have to be meek and patient and strive for sowing the unity of the Iraqi people".
