The meaning of Lent was the subject of Benedict XVI’s yesterday morning’s reflection before the Angelus Mass in Saint Peter’s Square. The Pope mentioned that next Wednesday will mark the beginning of Lent, with Ash Wednesday and penitential fasting. “During this time explained Benedict XVI we abstain from singing the hallelujah and we are encouraged to practice appropriate forms of penitential sacrifice. Lent is not to be faced in an ‘old’ spirit, as if it were a sort of heavy and burdensome task, but with the new spirit of those who have found in Jesus and His Easter mystery the meaning of life and feel that everything now must relate to Him”.
