EUROPE: IN NAPLES, CHILDREN LEARN “FLAVOURS” BY COOKING TRADITIONAL DISHES

” “Discovering the traditional recipes of the European countries, actually learning to cook them. Nothing special, were it not that the apprentice cooks are not one day older than five. The cooking workshop “I sapori d’Europa” (“Flavours of Europe”), attended by children aged two to five, is organised by the Children Centre “La città dei bambini” based in Soccavo (a district of Naples), which since 1998 has welcomed pre-school children. “Since December, once a week – explains the director of the centre, Lidia Guarino – amidst ladles and pots children have learnt how to cook simple European dishes, from Holland to England, from France to Spain, from Greece to Hungary”. By cooking, children become familiar with the traditions and eating customs of other children of their own age, thus appreciating the value of cultural diversity and the wealth that it offers. “The workshop – explains Guarino – will last all through the school year, until the end of June, and is part of a wider project called ‘Tanti colori un solo paese’ (‘So many colours, one single country’), which alternates with other theme workshops, where the children experiment with drama, manipulation, listening and new forms of communication”.
