EUROPE: THE APPLICATIONS FOR THE “TEMPLETON” AWARD FOR RELIGIOUS INFORMATION CAN NOW BE FILED

Applicants may now file written applications for the 2005 edition of the “John Templeton Award for the best European journalist dealing with religious information”, promoted by the Templeton Foundation (whose aim is to encourage relations between theology and science) and KEK (Conference of the European Churches, gathering 125 Orthodox, Anglican, Protestant and Old Catholic Churches of the whole Continent, as well as 40 associated organizations). The Award (five thousand Swiss francs) established in 1994 intends to reward the best editor of religious sections in the lay press, evaluating his precision, objectiveness and ecumenical spirit. It will be up to an international jury of communication experts to examine the dossiers of the candidates, who will have to send three of the articles they wrote during 2005 within March 31st, 2006. Current affairs, basic information, analysis or news, portrait of a person, an institute or a movement: those are the subjects for the competition papers. The winner of the Award will be invited to hold a lecture about religious information in contemporary society, at a cultural centre or university. In December 2005, Tomas Gärtner from Dresden (Dresdner Neuste Nachrichten) was awarded the prize for 2004 in his hometown. In the same month, the winner held a lecture in Geneva.
