“The memory must not become oblivion but a moment of reflection and forgiveness”. It is the hope expressed to RIS by Msgr Dino De Antoni, Archbishop of Gorizia, during the Memory Day, February 10th, recalling the victims of the dolines called foibas. “The Day – affirmed the bishop – will inevitably and legitimately remind us of the tragic events harming those families whose relatives were thrown into foibas. However, the memory must not be the chance to cause new tensions that are still simmering in the places where the foibas are located”. According to the Archbishop, “Gorizia has an important task under this point of view: don’t let the memory become oblivion but a moment of forgiveness and reflection. Forgiveness and reconciliation must be inevitable. It is also up to the Christians to create an atmosphere of communion, without contrasts. Every year, the peoples of Gorizia and Koper attend the foibas’ places, where citizens of both towns lost their lives. In the new Europe, there must be room for solidarity, forgiveness, and life in common”.
