ENGLAND: IN THE DIOCESES, TWO WEEKS ABOUT FAIR TRADE” “” “

” “Two weeks about fair trade. This is the initiative promoted by fifteen Catholic dioeces in England and Wales, which from Monday 13th March will organise small markets and tasting sessions with products coming from the developing countries. Some of these local churches, Southampton, Portsmouth, Arundel-Brighton, Brentwood, Hexham-Newcastle and Lancaster, can already pride themselves with the "fair trade" logo, which is granted when one third of the parish of the diocese use coffee and tea produced in accordance with ethic principles and when the diocese works for promoting "fair trade" products. Another ten are about to be granted the logo. "Becoming a Fair Trade diocese is much more than a contribution to ensure fair prices for goods made in some of the poorest regions in the world", stated Crispian Hollis, bishop of the diocese of Portsmouth, southern England, “What matters for our diocese, where 55% of the parish use Fair Trade goods, is the awareness we have gained of the plague of labour exploitation in the Third World and how we can support these workers in their fights”.” “
