SCANDINAVIAN BISHOPS: STREET CHILDREN, “THE PRIORITY OF PASTORAL COMMITMENT”

” “”The problems of children and teenagers who do not feel at ease in their homes must be one of the main priorities of the pastoral commitment of the Church”. This was established by the Scandinavian bishops at the end of the six-monthly assembly they attended in the last few days in Copenhagen, Denmark. After reviewing the final document of the 1st international meeting for the pastoral of street children, promoted in the Vatican in October 2004 by the Papal Council of the Pastoral for Migrants and Wanderers, the Scandinavian bishops decided to submit it to a wide number of agencies in their dioceses to which they will ask to read it in the light of their recent pastoral Letter about the Family. The comments of the agencies will be a contribution for the future action of the bishops, who are worried about the state of children and teenagers who, often at night, in the weekends and during the holidays, spend a lot of time away from their homes and families, living basically on the street. The other subjects addressed by the assembly include the revision of the training of priests and deacons, the catechesis and lifelong learning for adults, with special attention to young adults, the preparation to the Third European Ecumenical Assembly in 2007, for which Georg Müller, bishop of Trondheim, is responsible. During the assembly, the bishops also visited the sanctuary of San Knud at Odense, and were received by the local Lutheran bishop, Kresten Dreijergaard. ” “
