ITALY: CARD. RUINI, "I AM GETTING READY TO COVER THIS LAST STRETCH OF ROAD AS PRESIDENT OF CEI" (2)

An important event for the dioceses will be Palm Sunday, which will coincide, as usual, with the diocesan celebration of the XXI World Youth Day in the runup to the big Sidney event of 2008. “The young – said Ruini – are ‘the hope of the Church’, the new energies of mission and evangelisation, but to be such they need and are entitled, in this difficult scenario of culture and social behaviour, to be helped to grow and mature in their faith and in following the Lord”. In this session of the Permanent Council, the bishops will pay special attention to the Church Meeting of Verona. The preparatory journey – said Ruini – is "a tight schedule of dates and events”: the next one will be held in Novara and will be about "the delicate and varied sphere of human weakness”. Then, the cardinal mentioned the effort made by the dioceses with a view to Verona 2006: "this widespread work of confrontation and search – he said – is a prerequisite for the Days of Veron to be fruitful”. This part of the opening speech was closed by recalling father Andrea Santoro, the Roman priest murdered in Trebzon. His death – said Ruini – took place "regardless of its real reasons, in the context of that wave of violence that was triggered by the offending cartoons" of Muhammad. The cardinal then urged everyone to "behave responsibly".
