ISRAEL ELECTIONS: THREE CATHOLIC MPS IN THE KNESSET. MGR. MARCUZZO (NAZARETH), "A STRONG SIGN FOR EVERYONE IN THE HOLY LAND"

Three Catholic MPs too, two men and a woman, will sit on the benches of the 17th Knesset, the one that has come out of the elections of March 28th and which awarded victory, but not triumph, to Kadima, and which saw the success of the Labour Party, the parties of pensioners, the party of the Russian right wing and the defeat of the historical right wing, the Likud. This was revealed to Sir by mgr. Giacinto Boulos Marcuzzo, bishop of Nazareth, as he commented the results of yesterday’s elections in Israel. It is the Greek-Catholic Azmi Bishara, elected in the pan-Arab Nationalist List of the Assembly, Hanna Sued, elected in a list that is close to the Socialist Party, and Nadia Helou, elected among the Labour Party members. "It is the first time three Catholics sit at the Knesset at the same time – stated mgr. Marcuzzo – and this is the fruit of that journey that was started years ago by the diocesan synod launched by the patriarch Sabbah, in which great importance was attached to political commitment and to the citizenship of Catholics in society. Our congregation too must take part in the building of the common good and peace, without living on the edge of society. It is an important sign that comes from the elections and that commits us even more as believers".
