AUSTRIA: YOUNG HOMELESS PEOPLE WORKING AS "TOUR GUIDES" IN THE VIENNA OF THE HOMELESS. AN INITIATIVE OF THE AUSTRIAN ACRHDIOCESE

The discovery of a different type of Vienna: this is the intent of the Jugendkirche Wien, a youth organisation of the archdiocese of Vienna, offering to young people tours of the city guided by ex homeless people to visit the places where they used to live. This is a social action (called “jung, obdach? los!”) for schoolboys and groups of young people, to visit Vienna and get to know different perspectives of the Austrian capital. Over 120 young people have taken part in the last two weeks in these alternative tours. Along with social workers, the young meet homeless people living in stations and parks. In addition, they visit the home for young homeless people of the local Caritas agency, which every night gives out hot meals. The tour attractions include the Vienna’s shelter for the homeless and Vienna’s municipal Crisis Centre. The tours of the places of the homeless are documented by photos and films which will be used by Austrian artist Alfons Nebmaier to make a sculpture, to be displayed at an exhibition on April 2nd. The event will include a performance by the “Stimmgewitter Augustin" choir, all made of homeless people.
