PORTUGAL: FROM MARCH 9TH TO 12TH, IN BRAGA, THE SOCIAL WEEKS TO FIND OUT SOLUTIONS TO UNEMPLOYMENT

” “The social weeks of the Portuguese Catholics, taking place from 9 to 12 March in Braga, will be “a chance to ask for everybody’s commitment to solve the unemployment problem”. It was pointed out during the presentation of the initiative, by the Committee setting up the event. Important personalities on the national and worldwide level, such as Jacques Delors and Cardinal Raffaele Renato Martino, president of the Pontifical Council for justice and peace, will take part to it. According to Msgr. Antonino Dias, auxiliary bishop of Braga, “the unemployment and poverty drama is anti-evangelical – said Ecclesia Catholic agency -. The Church worries about this situation; there is so much poverty in the families; lots of people are hungry”. In fact, the subject of the Week, chosen by the Bishops’ Commission for the laity and the family, is: “A society creating employment”, with the aim of rallying dioceses as well as the social and ecclesiastical organizations to find out concrete solutions to a problem hitting the Portuguese society so fiercely. Over 300 enrolled for the event, recovering, after some years, the tradition of training the social conscience of the Catholics in Portugal, a training whose most prosperous period was in the fifties and sixties.” “
