BENEDICT XVI: BLESSING OF THE PALMS IN SAINT PETER’S SQUARE, JESUS "KING OF THE POOR, OF PEACE AND OF ALL PEOPLES ON EARTH"

” “In a solemn celebration in Saint Peter’s Square, Pope Benedict XVI blessed the palms and the olives on the Sunday before the Holy Week. In his sermon, the Pope went over what happened in Jerusalem 2000 years ago, that is, Jesus’ entering the Holy City. "The King of the poor", "the king of peace", the king of all peoples on earth. This is the way the Holy Writs – said the Pope – introduce Jesus. Firstly, the writs say that "He will be a king of the poor, a poor man amidst the poor and for the poor". "Poverty in the sense of Jesus – explained Benedict XVI later on – implies, first of all, one’s inner freedom of the greediness of possession and the craving for power". And inner freedom "is a prerequisite to overcome the corruption and greediness that are now ravaging the world; such freedom can only be found if God becomes our wealth". (to be continued)” “
