ECUMENISM: GREAT EXPECTATION FOR THE MEETING BETWEEN ROWAN WILLIAMS AND BENEDICT XVI; MGR. FALEY, "AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THE SPECIAL RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO CHURCHES"

” “An acknowledgement of the "special" relations between the Catholic Church and the Church of England and an exchange of opinions about some "hot" issues that are causing a stir within the Anglican faith such as the ordaining of women bishops and gay marriage. These will be – according to mgr. Andrew Faley, secretary general for ecumenical issues and inter-religious relations of the Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales – the items on the agenda during the visit that the archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, will pay to Pope Benedict XVI in the Vatican next November. The visit coincides with the fortieth anniversary of the epoch-making meeting between the archbishop of Canterbury, Michael Ramsey, and Pope Paul VI, in 1966. “Historically – said mgr. Faley to SIR – this meeting is an acknowledgement of the special relation that has come to exist between the Catholic Church and the Church of England after the 1966 meeting between archbishop Ramsey and Pope Paul VI”. “It is important – he added – because the Holy Father is thinking that a split is more and more likely to occur within the Church of England, as it is considering the idea of ordaining women bishops and other problems that have come up within the Anglican religion. These are most likely the items that will be discussed by the Pope and the archbishop of Canterbury”.” “
