HOLY WEEK: CARD. STAFFORD, "FORGIVING IS HARD BUT POSSIBLE". AMONG NEW SINS, "TOO MUCH TIME IN FRONT OF TV AND THE INTERNET"

” “A long list of questions to be answered for soul searching before approaching the Sacrament of Confession. Questions that involve old and new sins. The new sins, mentioned this afternoon at the penitential mass in the Basilica of Saint Peter’s, celebrated by card. James Francis Stafford, president of the Papal Council for the Lay, include that of spending "a disproportionately long time reading papers and magazines, watching TV and using the Internet", instead of "investing time in meditation and in the reading of the Holy Writs". Card. Stafford spoke about that in his sermon, recalling that especially during the Holy Week "the Church asks us to pray for forgiveness", even if nowadays there’s "no doubt many people find it hard to forgive". "The Holy Week alone – he said – answers their objections to the possibility of forgiving". "Many penitents – he specified – are the victims of unfair acts from others for which they bear a grudge. However, even victims should rediscover that only Jesus is the victim of atonement for our sins", in other words, "the divine man without sin takes the place of the sinners, thus winning the irreversibility of time. All people are thus free, redeemed, purified, released from fault and sin".” “
