The vigil of prayer to commemorate the first anniversary of John Paul II’s death began at 8.30 pm sharp. The initiative promoted by the Diocese of Rome was attended by over 80 thousand people. A multitude of candles were lit all through the Marian vigil, organised by the diocese of Rome. Just like one year ago, the faithful said the holy Rosary. In a suggestive climate of meditation and prayer, the initiative was opened by the reading of some passages written by Karol Wojtyla, alternating with songs sung by the choir of the Diocese of Rome. At 9.37 pm, the time Pope Wojtyla died, Benedict XVI from the window of his study of the Bishops Palace began to read a short speech to commemorate the figure of John Paul II.
