UNITED KINGDOM: CARD. MURPHY O’CONNOR, "FREE TRADE DOES NOT LEAD TO SOCIAL JUSTICE"

” “"Free trade on its own does not lead to social justice and it’s the society’s common responsibility to tackle this issue": this was stated today by cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor, archbishop of Westminster, as he spoke at a meeting of Caritas-social action, which is being held today and tomorrow in Cambridge. A statement based on the observation of the "growing number of people who in the United Kingdom are affected by poverty, marginalisation, estrangement, violence and all forms of abuse", since one out of four live under the poverty threshold and "in our society, the gap between the rich and the poor keeps growing all the time". Then, making reference to Benedict XVI’s encyclical, "Deus caritas est", cardinal O’Connor repeated: "the Church is perfectly aware that the effects of free trade are not enough for social justice". Sarah Lindsell, director of Caritas-social actions, added that "in the XXI century, in one of world’s richest countries, we should not be still here seeking justice".” “
