INTER-RELIGIOUS DIALOGUE: THE HOLY SEE AND THE ECUMENICAL COUNCIL OF THE CHURCHES LAUNCH A RESEARCH INTO RELIGIOUS CONVERSION

” “The Vatican and the ecumenical Council of the Church launch a plan for a three-year research that shall lead to the compilation of a common "code of conduct" to be adopted by all Christian Churches for the often controversial management of religious conversions from an inter-religious perspective. The plan – named "Inter-religious reflection about conversion: from controversy to a common code of conduct" – will be launched during a meeting in Velletri (Rome) from May 12th to 16th. It was announced by a release that was sent tout today by the ecumenical Council of the Churches, specifying that the plan is an initiative of the Papal Council for Inter-religious Dialogue of the ecumenical Council. The meeting will be attended by about thirty people, including Buddhists and Hindus, delegates from traditional religions, Jews and Muslims. The research will start from a review of the current state of affairs, then it will look at religious conversion from a Christian perspective, then a common code of conduct will be drawn up. The code – reads the release of the ecumenical Council – should make a distinction "between testimony and proselytism" and confirm "mutual respect of the freedom of thinking, conscience and religion". ” “
