” “Before the reasons for worry that emerge from the international scenario, such as the political problems of Israelis and Palestinians, the complicated institutional set-up of Iraq and Afghanistan, Iran’s nuclear program, the sufferings of Africa and the threat of terrorism, “there’s a pressing need of a more present Europe, in particular the European Union, on the world’s scene”. This was said by card. Camillo Ruini, president of the Italian Bishops Conference (Cei), in the address which today opened, in the Synod room of the Vatican, the 56th General Meeting of Italian Bishops. “So far, however stated the cardinal as to the approval of the Constitutional treaty and as to the development of a common defence and foreign policy, the European Union failed to overcome the current deadlock: these are therefore the areas on which efforts must be concentrated and a Unitarian spirit must prevail”. The President of Cei also commented that, “especially the EU Parliament insists on taking positions that fail to comply with the subsidiariety principle, the specific cultures and traditions of each member state and are in profound contrast with some fundamental anthropological truths”.
