BENEDICT XVI: CATECHESIS, PETER’S ANSWER TO JESUS “BRINGS IN EMBRYO THE CONFESSION OF FAITH OF THE CHURCH”

” “"Peter’s answer" to Jesus’ question, “Who do the people say I am?'” “brings in itself as if in embryo the future confession of faith of the Church”. It was stated by Benedict XVI in the usual Wednesday catechesis which today was focussed on the Apostle Peter. Referring back to the subject of the apostolic succession, introduced last week, during today’s general audience in Saint Peter’s Square the Pope announced his intention to “come into contact with the personalities of each Apostle, by looking at their profiles as they are portrayed by the New Testament”. Starting from the portrait of Peter, "the best known and most mentioned character in the New Testament”, a “fisherman" and a "Jewish believer", specified Benedict XVI, one "of the first four disciples of the Nazarene”. As he went through their biographies, the Pope highlighted that he was "determined and impulsive", but "at the same time, naïve and shy, and yet honest”. After "Jesus’ call" on Lake Genèsaret, “Peter would experience another significant moment of his spiritual journey near Caesarea Philippi, when Jesus asked his disciples a very specific question: Who do the people say I am?'” went on Benedict XV, highlighting that Peter’s answer was "you are the Christ", which "brings in itself as if in embryo the future confession of faith of the Church”.
