EUROPE: OLLI REHN (EU), AFTER THE REFERENDUM IN MONTENEGRO: “BUILDING CONSENSUS AROUND EUROPE’S VALUES”

” “There was satisfaction for the “calmness and professionalism characterizing the referendum in Montenegro; they were important for the approval of vote legitimacy”. It was manifested by Olli Rehn, EU opening commissioner. “The official results reveal the victory of the independence front – it is written in a statement made known today -. Now, all the parties should respect those results. Together, they should undertake to build consensus around the values and the standards of Europe”. Hoping for dialogue “between Serbia and Montenegro”, Rehn states that “the perspectives of Europe are open for Montenegro, and for Serbia, too, as soon as it meets the required criteria. In particular, Serbia is supposed to collaborate with the International Court in relation to crimes in former Yugoslavia”. Waiting for the final confirmation of the results, Rehn says: “The Commission of the European Union will prepare two proposals for the Council of Ministers, “one for new negotiations relating to the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA)” with “independent Montenegro”, and “one for changing the SAA mandate with Serbia”. “Those proposals – concludes the EU commissioner – will strengthen the obtained results and will make up the basis for continuing negotiations”.
