EUROPE: BARROSO AND DIMAS (EU COMMISSION) LAUNCH THE EU CAMPAIGN AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE (2)

” “To launch the campaign against climate change, the president of the EU Commission, José Manuel Barroso, and the Environment Commissioner, Stavros Dimas, unveiled a huge poster affixed on to the Berlaymont, the seat of the Executive Commission in Brussels, portraying the planet Earth and a thermostat measuring its temperature increase. The motto chosen for the campaign is: "Climate change: you can control it. Save energy. Recycle. Walk". Dimas stated: "To those who think their personal conduct makes no difference, I reply that the EU households alone produce a considerable amount of the total greenhouse gas emissions". "Everyone can play their part in reducing such emissions". The campaign will take place in three phases (June, September and November 2006) across the EU and in the member states. Figures provided by the Commission’s experts show that "every EU citizen produces 11 tons/year of greenhouse gas emissions, mostly CO2". Private cars alone produce one half of all emissions produced by transport. "In addition, everyone can help reduce emissions from other industries by reducing their waste and having their waste recycled or composted". ” “
