INTER-RELIGIOUS DIALOGUE: MESSAGE TO BUDDHISTS FOR THE FEAST OF VESACH, "TOGETHER TO SERVE MANKIND" (2)

” “The message – sent out this morning by the pressroom of the Holy See – reminds Buddhists of the last Encyclical by Benedict XVI, "God is Love", and explains that, for Christians, "the love of God and one’s fellow creatures are inseparable and form one single lesson". In addition, the Catholic Church recognises and appreciates "the importance" that Buddhists too attach "to love for one’s neighbours". It is a love – reads the message – "that is willing to sacrifice its interests to the benefit of mankind". Hence the heart of the message, that is, an invitation: "In this world in which the word love is so often used and wasted, wouldn’t it be useful if Buddhists and Christians rediscovered its original meaning, based on their traditions, and shared what they have understood? It would be an encouragement, for the followers of both traditions, to work together to build relations founded on love and truth, to promote mutual respect, to carry on with dialogue and further cooperation to serve the needy “.
