BENEDICT XVI: TO YOUNG PRIESTS, NO TO CAREERISM WITHIN THE CHURCH, "ONLY THOSE WHO GIVE THEIR LIFE FIND IT"

Young people making their entrance into priesthood must not pursue "the image of careerism", they must not use this road to "climb up the ladder" or to "secure a position through the Church". "Only those who give their life find it". It was a sermon full of "suggestions", the one uttered yesterday morning by Benedict XVI on the Sunday the Church celebrates the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, about: "Vocation in the mystery of the Church". The Pope specifically said Mass in the Vatican Basilica, during which he ordained 15 priests: 13 deacons of the diocese of Rome and 2 priests of the Order of the discalced Carmelites. As he spoke to the young priests, Benedict XVI recalled "the image of the man who through priesthood wants to become important, to become someone; the image of he who aims at elevating himself and not at humbly serving Jesus Christ". Priests – went on the Holy Father – must not wish "they will become someone", but that "they will be there for the other, for Christ, and so, through Him and with Him, they will be there for men" in order to lead men "along the way of life".
