” “A new web identity for the EU institutions. As from today, the Day of Europe (celebrating the Schuman declaration of May 9th 1950, which kick-started the integration process), the websites of the EU Parliament, Council and Commission and the other EU institutions will be working under the top-level domain “.eu”. “This means explains a note from the Executive Committee that they can use such domain to cast their web identity, as after all the citizens have been able to do since April 7th 2006”. This kick-starts the reform advocated by Viviane Reding, commissioner for the information society: “europa.eu becomes the one and only Internet brand and the only login point for access to the EU institutions and agencies”. According to Margot Wallström, deputy president of the EU Commission in charge of the communication strategy, “the new web identity of the EU institutions is a symbolic one. The EU should revolve less around its institutions and more around its citizens”. The “.eu” domain will “make the EU more visible on the Internet and therefore more visible to its own citizens”. The existing “.int” addresses of the EU institutions “will still be accessible for a temporary period of at least one year”. After all, the new “.eu” domain “has instantly been a hit according to Viviane Reding -, with over one million registered names”.
