RUSSIA: SAINT-PETERSBURG, VULGAR NOISES TO DISTURB A MASS. THE SILENCE OF THE POLICE OFFICERS AND MEDIA

Obscene dances and vulgar performances with participation of the scantly dressed woman and transvestites and drunken spectators blocking the access to the main entrance of St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral and beating a woman. It’s what happened on last 27th of May, the day of founding of Saint-Petersburg. The news is referred by Maria Anikina, Sir correspondant from Russia, who has gathered the testimony of the senior priest of the church fr. M. Rusetskiyi: “the indecent show took place on the square next to the Cathedral in the heart of the city during the whole evening. Things happened next to the Cathedral seem to be real desecration of the church. The feelings of our parishioners are outraged”. Music accompanied the show was so loud that made it impossible to perform the evening Mess. A group of drunken spectators blocked the access to the main entrance of the Cathedral, the glass covered the bulletin board near the Cathedral was broken, one woman was beaten”. According to fr. Rusetskiyi, St. Catherine parish’s administration didn’t give any kind of permission to organize such an outrageous event. It is worth to mention that police officers stayed calm and looked indifferently on the disorder of the mob. “It is shameful and painful that such things could happen in our city which from the very beginning, Peter the Great times, was remarkable for tolerance and respect to the people of different confessions. The show that took place this week demonstrated clearly that our society is far from the ideals of morality” has been the reaction of the parishioners and other people. Many of the visitors (catholic, orthodox and even non-believers) supported the offended citizens of St. Petersburg. There is no doubt that it was offensive not only for the catholic believers who attended the services, but also citizens who came to celebrate the festivities with kids. Unfortunately most of Russian media keep silent about this event.
