EUROPE: THE NETWORK OF CLUNIAC SITES, THE NEW “GREAT EUROPEAN CULTURAL TOUR”

” “The network of Cluniac sites will be officially awarded the title of “Great European cultural tour” during a ceremony due on tomorrow June 16th in Cluny, France. With this award, the Council of Europe, that promoted the initiative, means to recall the great influence that was exerted by the Cluniac order and that is reflected in the building of 1,400 Cluniac buildings in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Belgium. The Benedictine abbey, founded in 910 by William the Pious, has promoted values that still apply today: peace, social cohesion, art and culture. The network of the great European cultural tours was established in 1987 in order to visibly show that the heritage of each European country is a common cultural heritage of Europe. The general assembly of the Federation of Cluniac sites of 2006 will meet on June 17th and 18th during the ceremony for the awarding of the diploma of “Great European cultural tour”.
