EUROPE: BARROSO (EU COMMISSION), "THE DECLARATION OF BERLIN WILL SHOW THE WAY TO THE FUTURE OF THE EU"

It will be up to the EU Commission to "present in Autumn a report on the EU’s ability to take up more member states" with reference to the future extension of the EU boundaries. José Manuel Barroso, at the press conference that closed the 25-state summit, stated that "any extension of the EU has been a success. This also applies to the latest one of 2004. Now we look at the candidate countries, with which we mean to continue the process of mutual rapprochement". Then, the president of the EU Commission explained "the importance that next year’s Declaration of Berlin will have to have". To coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Treaties that established the European Community (March 25th, 1957), "the German chair on duty committed itself to convene an extraordinary meeting, whose result will be this document, which is important to give value to the history of the integration process as well as, and above all, to show the way to the future" of the EU. Barroso gives a positive judgment of the "double-rail policy" that has been decided by the heads of state and government (institutional reforms and "factual results" to the benefit of the citizens). "Then, I also consider extremely important the decision about Slovenia entering the euro-zone on January 1st 2007 – he commented -. This is a fresh start in the economic and monetary integration process that at least is opening up to the East".
