ITALY: LOCAL CHURCH; CANOBBIO (THEOLOGIAN), THE "SENSE OF TRADITION" HAS GONE LOST

” “The local Church is the foundation of the transmission of faith down the generations. This is the starting point of the report of Giacomo Canobbio, lecturer in dogmatic theology at the Studio Teologico Paolo VI in Brescia, who spoke this morning at the 56th national week of the pastoral guidance centre, which is in progress in Parma, about "The local Church, the mother of Christians and the hope of the world". "The Church was born and grows through the communication of experiences thanks to the strength of the Spirit", he stated. "Faith, in the sense of one’s personal choice of adhering to the Lord, cannot be transmitted – he added – but there’s no doubt that the possibility of choosing is given by the communication of knowledge and experiences". But today "the sense of tradition" has gone lost: Canobbio thinks that "the new generations would not be willing to be introduced to life experiences by the adults", and hence they believe "everyone must be left to make their own experiences and within the scope of faith everyone must be left free to choose". The result is a sort of do-it-yourself religiosity, a "narcissistic religiosity in which the end of one’s quest is not Jesus Christ but one’s wellbeing".” “
