” “"Family, life, nature and roots in the land". These are the values that immigrants bring into the European society, states the bishop Bernardo Álvarez of Tenerife, one of the Spanish islands that every week see the coming of several people from sub-Saharan Africa. Mgr. Bernardo Álvarez comments with Sir the massive arrival of people on "cayucos", the small fishing boats that carry migrants from Africa to the Canary Islands. "Immigration will cure our individualistic society. And then there’s no point getting scared or seeing ghosts. We do need people. Who looks after our children or parents? Who cleans our streets? Who tills the land and builds houses?", asks the prelate. "Immigration is increasing and the ideal situation he insist would be to redeploy it". "Europe needs 50 million workers by 2025", recalls the bishop, who denounces "the inhuman conditions in which they arrive here". "Our parishes are their landmarks, they feel at home" and we must "look after" this aspect more. The bishop asks for a "global plan" for Africa, because "it is clear by now that day after day, more will come, in larger boats and from more countries".” “
