EUROPEAN CHURCHES: MEETING ON THE TEACHING OF RELIGION AT SCHOOL

Delegates of the Catholic Churches of Europe, who are conducting a survey on the teaching of religion at school (Ir) in the Old Continent, are going to meet in Rome on July 10th and 11th. The meeting will be an opportunity to reflect on the changes that are taking place in contemporary Europe, which is becoming more and more of a meeting place of diversity and looking ahead to a multicultural and multi-religious future. The reports – by Mauro Ceruti from the University of Bergamo and mgr. Vincenzo Zani from the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education – will also tackle the issue of the education of the European man and the role the teaching of religion can play. The schedule also includes an exchange of information about the situation of the teaching of religion in each country, so as to draw up a national report processed by experts in the next few months. The survey, approved and promoted by the Council of European Bishops Conferences (Ccee), has been put forward by the attendant Service of the Italian Bishops Conference. One of its goals is to directly involve the Churches, create a network of contacts and connections, develop an updated report on the situation of the teaching of religion in Europe, while looking for and investigating the relevant opportunities and resources. The meeting follows the development of a research protocol for an international team that will handle the project stages.
