FRANCE: THE BISHOPS, "RESEARCH INTO EMBRYO CELLS IS A MAJOR ETHIC INFRINGEMENT

“A major ethic infringement". This is how the French bishops denounce the recent approval by the EU Parliament of research into embryo stem cells. "The embryo – state the bishops in a release of June 29th – cannot be regarded as test material. It is already a human being, not an object that man can do what he likes with." The decision of the EU Parliament, according to the French Bishops Conference, "is alarming, partly because this type of research is forbidden in many EU member states". And since "the use and destruction of human embryos concerns the inviolability of life and human dignity and relates to the deepest beliefs of many European citizens, the European Union – highlight the bishops – has the moral duty to abstain from funding and promoting this type of research". With such a refusal, "the Church does not mean to be an obstacle to research. The results of this type of research are uncertain, and other research forms without any particular ethic difficulty should be encouraged. Science can make progress without disrespecting human dignity". ” “
