HUNGARY-SLOVAKIA: THE BISHOPS SIGN A LETTER OF FORGIVENESS AND RECONCILIATION TO HEAL "THE WOUNDS OF THE PAST" (2)

The Hungarian bishops ask for "God’s mercy and forgiveness for all the acts committed in this region against anyone, due to their ethnical, national, cultural background or language. We are especially saddened to recall those circumstances in which Hungarians hurt Slovakian people and communities. At the same time, we renew in ourselves the feeling of respect and reconciliation, of that forbearing love that our people too must feel for the personal and general abuse suffered at times in the past. We forgive and ask to be forgiven.” The Slovakian bishops replied like this: “With serious consistency, we welcome the public manifestation of these historical truths, we are grateful to God and ask for mutual understanding and reconciliation. Therefore, we forgive and ask to be forgiven”. “The Catholics of the two neighbouring countries admit they are joined in Christ. We are a Church”, stressed mgr. František Tondra in his homily. “Before such unity, anything that might divide use must step back. We want to forget what has been negative in our past cohabitation. Of all that has been positive instead, we want to make us in the area of spiritual life and culture for mutual enrichment. Therefore – concluded the Slovakian archbishop – let’s help each other".” “
