“Eugenics they state is a hateful practice that consists in selecting babies-to-be based on utilitarian criteria that do not respect their inherent dignity”. The practice of therapeutic babies, in particular, "is a shameful form of eugenics, hidden behind a feel-good mask”. The Bishops also refer to a provision of the Swiss Federal Chambers which in 2005 accepted negative eugenics (suppression of embryos that carry inappropriate genetic features), while they would like to put a ban on positive eugenics (selection of acceptable embryos)”. But both practices, according to the Swiss Church, are "inconsistent and unrealistic" because they are still a form of “manipulation of human beings”. “Switzerland they state must send a clear sign by prohibiting therapeutic babies and any other form of manipulation of human embryos”. Alternative options, they think, can be found in the promotion of the donor culture (organ, blood and marrow donation) in the adult population, something that "would make therapeutic babies useless”.
