EUROPE: "CHALLENGES TO DEMOCRACY IN TODAY’S EUROPE". THE SUMMER UNIVERSITY OF THE CoE STARTS IN STRASBOURG

” “"A shared reflection of how to face the challenges to democracy in today’s Europe". At the premises of the Council of Europe, this is the presentation of the purpose of the "Summer University for Democracy", due from today t July 14th at the Palais de l’Europe. Strasbourg gathered 500 participants from 15 countries, who are enrolled in the eleven political science schools that the CoE has opened in some countries of the old continent. The courses have been opened this morning by Terry Davis, secretary general of the Council of Europe. The opening lecture has been given by Serguei Stanishev, prime minister of Bulgaria. "The event will be attended by many international leading figures – explains a note from the CoE – such as Vladimir Lukin, mediator for human rights of the Russian Federation, Milan Kucan, ex president of Slovenia, Jo Leinen, president of the Constitutional Affairs Commission of the EU Parliament". Three are the main subjects of discussion: "New challenges to democracy and human rights in Europe today"; "European projects: the present and future of the shared action"; "Guiding public actions and good governance". The lectures will be followed by workshops involving mostly young university students and by visits to some local institutions. The closing ceremony next Friday will be attended by John Hume, the Peace Nobel prize-winner. ” ” ” “
