Developing a report on the situation of the teaching of religion in the schools of their countries. It is the "homework" given to the delegates of the 34 European Bishops Conferences that are members of the CCEE (Council of European Bishops Conferences), gathered in Rome until today for the workshop that marks the beginning of the survey promoted by CCEE on the proposal of the Italian Bishops Conference. The plan, approved by the plenary assembly of CCEE in October 2005, "aims at involving the Catholic Churches of Europe by promoting discussions about the teaching of religion in the schools, strengthening exchanges of experiences between different church communities and raising awareness of educational responsibilities. It also aims at creating a shared feeling of increased awareness, in European society, of the contribution given by religion/s and church communities to the construction of man and the new Europe, contributing to an ongoing reflection, that will go hand in hand with the changes that are taking place in Europe today". The delegates of the Catholic Churches of Europe have formed a taskforce in Rome, meeting and working together at the survey scheme that has been developed by the staff in charge of the research. They have promised to develop and send the Report to the staff by November 2006.
