EUROPE: BORRELL (EU PARLIAMENT) VISITING CHINA. VERHEUGEN (EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE) ON A MISSION TO JAPAN

” “”Europe and China must join forces”: this is the message that is being repeated over these days by Josep Borrell, president of the EU Parliament who is in China now for one week’s official visit (until July 14th). The Spanish politician is meeting Chinese government leaders and MPs (National People’s Assembly), leaders of non-governmental agencies and some businessmen. After Peking, the visit will take him to Shanghai and Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. “The visit to Lhasa (where the president will see the progress of the development work funded by the EU) will take place – explains a note from the EU Parliament – a few weeks after his meeting with the Dalai Lama in Brussels”. The president stated that “the EU Parliament has always been interested in the problems of Tibet and I personally want to see with my eyes what is happening in that land”. But Borrell is not the only EU leader who is looking at the Far East right now: Günter Verheugen, vice-president of the Commission, in charge of enterprises and industry, will go on an official visit to Tokyo on July 13-14, “to meet the Japanese counterparts and develop common measures to strengthen economic cooperation”.
