HOLY LAND: CUSTODY, EVIDENCE FROM BEIRUT, "NO COUNTRY IS HELPING US"

"Last night, July 16th, the Israelis attacked the harbour that is in front of us and the bombing was terrible. There are no airports or harbours any more, not even the borders with Syria because they have been attacked. They are blocking every area and destroying all the passages between cities. They are destroying the little villages, especially in the South. Unfortunately, no country is helping us". This evidence was given by a Franciscan clergyman from Beirut and has been published by the Custody of the Holy Land which does not mention the man’s name. "What the Lebanese have in common is solidarity – goes on the testimony – as well as great tension, stress and nerves. People are worn out. We want Israel to stop at least one day, because they have been endlessly bombing for five days". The fear to remain cut out can be felt in the words of the Poor Clare nuns of Beirut: "Israel began by destroying the streets, the bridges, the runways of the international airport of Beirut, and the military airports of Rayah and Kleyat. Israeli patrol boats are patrolling the sea in search of merchant ships. In other words: all connections are impassable, either by land, air or sea. We still have the telephone, the Internet and the mobile phones. This is how we are sending you this little news, just in case these media too should be suppressed".
