MIDDLE EAST: THE ROME SUMMIT; MGR. TWAL (PATRIARCHATE OF JERUSALEM), "FACTS MUST FOLLOW WORDS". A PRAYER IN LOURDES

” “"The humanitarian corridor is fine, the UN Peace Force is fine, but now facts must follow words". This is the dry comment given to SIR by mgr. Fuad Twal, bishop coadjutor of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, about the peace summit on Lebanon that has just ended in Rome and during which the participants asked for a long-lasting ceasefire and the go-ahead to an international intervention force appointed by the UN. "From what I heard from here – said mgr. Twal on the phone from Lourdes, where he is on a pilgrimage – there is no agreement yet about the ceasefire, but the delegations have outlined a route to get there. The problem is that, in the meantime, destruction and death are going on. I have a feeling that, to be in peace, the populations will have to wait. We need real facts. They want to find a peace plan, but the conflict that is the root cause of it all, i.e. the war between Israelis and Palestinians, has gone on for sixty years. If this is not solved, there will be no peace for the Middle East and for the world". "I am in Lourdes with thousands of young people from all over Europe, led by their bishops – concludes the archbishop – and they all sympathise with the Holy Land, the Middle East. Tomorrow I am going to celebrate Mass for three thousand young people and I will thank them for being so sympathetic with us".” “
