MOSCOW: INTER-RELIGIOUS SUMMIT; CARD. POUPARD, RELIGIONS "PLAY A UNIQUE ROLE IN THE CREATION OF FAIRER SOCIETIES"

” “An opportunity to "share our common concerns at the start of the third millennium, by restating our shared commitment to cooperate with new strength and confidence to an intercultural and inter-religious dialogue that may serve an integral, sympathetic humanism". This is, according to card. Paul Poupard, president of the Papal Councils of Culture and Religious Dialogue, the world summit of the leaders of the great religions that opened in Moscow this morning (until July 5th). Card. Poupard, who is a member of the delegation of the Holy See – invited to the Summit by the Patriarch of Moscow, Alexius II, and headed by card. Walter Kasper, president of the Papal Council for the Unity of Christians –, as he spoke at the meeting, thanked "patriarch Alexius II and the Inter-religious Council of Russia for this important event". Then, card. Poupard insisted on "the unique role played by religions in the creation of fairer societies, in which harmony and peace may reign" and restated "the shared will to strengthen dialogue between religions and with the political and civilian authorities, aware of everyone’s responsibilities". In addition, the cardinal illustrated the challenges thrown by the "increasing phenomenon of globalisation", highlighting that "the top priority remains the same: to build a city worthy of man" and "to make sure the men and women of our times will not forsake the universal human values".
