GrEAT BRITAIN: DOCTORS AGAINST EUTHANASIA, IMPROVING PALLIATIVE TREATMENT

” “Doctors in the UK are against euthanasia. With a vote, the “British Medical Association”, the professional association that brings together 130,000 British doctors, showed it is against any form of assisted suicide. Last year, the medical association had taken a more neutral position on the subject. A significant majority of doctors, 84%, voted for an improvement of palliative treatment, 65% against the legalisation of assisted suicide and voluntary euthanasia. 94% said no to involuntary euthanasia for patients who cannot take a decision. Oncologist Andrew Davies explained why he voted against euthanasia: "many of my patients are afraid they might become a burden for their families. What worries me most is that the so-called right to die may become for them a duty to die”. “Last week’s vote of the “British Medical Association” is extremely important”, stated a spokesperson of the Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales. “It gives a clear message that the medical profession in the United Kingdom today is clearly against any amendment to the law. We need better palliative treatment for the terminally ill”. For some time, the Catholic parishes and dioceses have been working hard to raise the congregation’s awareness of the defence of life, from conception through to its natural end.” “
