” “Hunger strikes, pacific demonstration actions, letter to authorities, interventions by the Vatican, the Romanian Hebrew and the Orthodox: the denunciations to save the Saint Joseph Catholic Cathedral of Bucharest were useless, until now (from April to the present day). The Cathedral is in danger of collapsing owing to the construction, in progress, of a huge building with the height of 75 metres. And the construction is taking place less than ten metres from the Cathedral. The building has 19 floors on the surface and 4 subterranean levels. It is called “Cathedral Plaza”. And it is being built on an unstable soil, with superficial water table. “I share a feeling of deep sadness and impotence with the Catholics in Romania, before the indifference of the Romanian authorities – declared the Archbishop of Bucharest, Ioan Robu, today, in the appeal he sent to the Bishops’ Conferences, which remained impassive before the countless memories and protests against the unlawful construction seriously endangering the safety and the dignity of the sacred place. The building also prevents the usual carrying out of religious services. By authorizing the construction of the huge building, the authorities threw a wrench into the Romanian Catholic Church. The believers feel that their rights are being violated and their values trampled on”. (to be continued)” “
