ECUMENISM: WILLIAMS (KEK), “MORE ATTENTION TO THE WORK OF THE CHURCHES FOR JUSTICE AND FREEDOM”

” “”Too often, the impact of religious extremisms on human events has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. More attention should be paid instead to the relentless work that the Churches and religious movements are engaged in to promote justice, freedom and equality on a national and international scale”. It was said today in Moscow by the secretary general of Kek (Conference of European Churches), Colin Williams, when speaking on the final day of the world summit of the leaders of the great religions. With reference to the Third European Ecumenical Assembly (Aee3) due in Sibiu (Romania) in September 2007, Williams confirmed their "commitment to pull down the barriers that still separate us” and expressed the wish that that meeting, which will be attended by "our 125 Churches", may "strengthen Kek so that it will proclaim with fresh vigour the view of a new Europe” in which "all citizens will be equally respected”. He also mentioned the forthcoming G8 of Saint Petersburg: “We have to critically see to what extent the G8 countries have worked" towards the "eradication of poverty, the objective set out by last year’s summit”. “As men of faith – concluded Williams – we have to find ways to humanise the effects of globalisation by giving the economic policies an ethical direction”.” “
