SEPTEMBER 11TH: VAN DER LINDEN (EU COUNCIL), AGAINST TERRORISM, “PROMOTING DIALOGUE BETWEEN CULTURES AND RELIGIONS”

“Preventing such a tragedy ever happening again" by fighting terrorism, as well as "by conquering the hearts and souls”. This is the way "to a safer world", which has been shown today by René van der Linden, president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the Twin Towers attack. “The memory of the victims – stated van der Linden – spurs us” to “proactively look for the authors of the terrorist attacks and refer them to justice, thus showing at the same time that we are wary and determined to prevent new attacks. This difficult mission – he added – however must be accomplished within the framework of international law and human rights, otherwise our efforts for security will be useless”. But, according to van der Linden, "making our world safer" implies "another factor, which is less showy but equally vital: conquering the hearts and souls”. After all, he specified, "promoting intercultural and inter-religious dialogue, i.e. encouraging the nations, the cultures and the faiths to meet and get to know each other better has always been one of the main components of the actions of the Council of Europe”. In the fight against terrorism, he concluded, "we have a trump card, which is often forgotten: mutual understanding”.
