BENEDICT XVI IN GERMANY: AT REGENSBURG, “FAITH DOES NOT WANT TO SCARE US” BUT “CALL US TO BE RESPONSIBLE”; A SPECIAL “THANK-YOU” FOR THE RECEPTION

“Faith does not want to scare us”, but “call us to be responsible”. From the esplanade of Islinger Feld, the Pope sent an invitation to be witnesses, starting from the anxiety for “justice” that is in the background of the Last Judgement and the ensuing wish of the Christians, “that the excess of injustice and suffering that can be seen all through history may eventually fade away”, so that “everything will make sense”. “We must not waste our life or abuse it”, exhorted Benedict XVI as he commented the perspective of the Last Judgement and that of the Resurrection of the Dead, which marks the end of the Creed: “nor have we to fear it for ourselves; we must not be unmoved by injustice, thus becoming connivers or even accomplices of it. We must sense our mission in history and try to match it”. “Not fear, but responsibility – responsibility and concern for our salvation and for the salvation of all the world are needed”, wished the Holy Father, who in the first part of his homily sent a “heart-felt thank-you” to all those who have worked to organise his reception: “I was deeply moved – he confessed – when I heard how many people have worked to decorate my house and my garden”. At the end of the homily, the Pontiff mentioned today’s Feast of the name of Mary: “To all those who bear this name – my mother and my sister did – I would like to express my most heart-felt wishes for their name-day”.
