BENEDICT XVI IN GERMANY: VESPERS AT REGENSBURG, "OUR FIRST TASK IS TO REDISCOVER GOD IN OUR LIFE"

” “As he greeted "the friends of the different traditions of the Reform", the Pope, during the celebration of the Vespers in the Cathedral of Regensburg, thought "of the tiring work of searching for consensus about the justification". Consensus about the justification, said Benedict XVI, "remains for us a great commitment, which in fact has not been fully accomplished yet: in theology, the justification is an essential subject, but in the life of the faithful – I think – it is barely present today". According to the Holy Father, "even if, because of the dramatic events of our time, the subject of mutual forgiveness comes up in all its urgency, once again – of the fact that we need first and foremost God’s forgiveness, the justification through Him, we are scarcely aware". Actually, more often than not, "the modern conscience no longer sees the fact that in front of God we really have debts and that sin is a reality that can only be overcome by the initiative of God. Behind this weakening of the subject of the justification and the forgiveness of the sins lies in fact a weakening of our relationship with God. Because of this, our first task may be that of rediscovering, in a new way, the living God in our life".” “
