He joined the Diplomatic service of the Holy See on March 1st 1986 and worked in the Papal delegations in Algeria, Chile, the Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, in Lebanon and lastly at the Section for Relations with the States of the Secretariat of State. On May 18th 2002, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Sudan and Apostolic Delegate in Somalia and a member of the Titular See in Sagona as an archbishop. He was consecrated bishop on July 3rd 2002.
