” ““Reflecting on the nature of the TV phenomenon, studying the opportunities offered to the Church” and “creating a new network of cooperation”: these are, according to mgr. John P. Foley, President of the Papal Council for Social Communications, the goals of the World Congress of Catholic TVs, due in Madrid from October 10th to 13th. As he spoke in the Vatican at the press conference for the presentation of the congress, which will be attended by the TVs of 48 countries (Catholic TVs in the world are about 2,000), mgr. Foley highlighted: “Our responsibility is to promote and facilitate the job of communication within the Church and within society”. Hence the importance of reflecting on the identity “of the Catholic TV, by studying how to create dynamisms that can be useful to everybody, based on the “necessity-service” equation, with a special boost to support the smaller, less equipped TV stations. “This means creating a new network of cooperation”, explained mgr. Foley, by working also “at very practical issues, such as the economic and administrative aspects of the TV industry, the professional skills of the staff, the standards and variety of formats, the quality of information”.
